Science Club were identifuing metals using flame tests today!

Using their loops, making sure they were nice and clean, students were learning how to identify the presence of different metals ions, from the colours that their flames burn when held over a flame.  It was quite tricky to tell the difference between one or two of the different metals, however, they learnt that a green flame and green coloured substance always indicates the presence of copper.

A practical use of different coloured flames is in the prduction of fireworks!
