On our history trip, we were guided by two brilliant battlefield guides who led us through many historic sites across France and Belgium. We visited battlefields, cemeteries, memorials, and bunkers, with our guides providing detailed explanations of each location's history and additional insights into the First World War.  Overall, we all enjoyed the experience and a lot was learnt from this trip.

One of the most memorable aspects of the recent WWI Battlefields trip was our visit to the Menin Gate - one of four memorials to missing soldiers in Belgian Flanders. It was particularly significant for me as my great-great grandfather, Horace, is named on the memorial. Horace was part of the first British battalion to fire a shot on the Germans in World War One and was wounded and later killed fighting in the trenches early on in the war. We do not think he ever got to meet his baby daughter, my great-grandmother, before he died.
With no grave to visit back in England, I had the opportunity to lay a wreath for Horace at the Menin Gate and to spare a minute to thank him - and all the brave men and women - who helped to keep our country safe back then, but who did not get to return home. Having the chance to visit the trenches and the war memorials really helped to bring their efforts, and our GCSE learning to life.
